I am not against a PTO, maybe Jimmy Hayes? but I think they should really utilize training camp to give kids a good look and keep as much cap space open as possible.

If a decent depth player becomes available on waivers as we get closer to season, grab him, that's how they got Puempel in the first place

keep as much cap space as possible

Make Marc Staal a 4th line checking forward, he'd be good in that role since he has ZERO offensive game and a defensive mindset. Plus maybe he gets so pissed off, he begs for a trade or retires.

Problems solved
+ Depth up front
- Staal on the back end
- Staal's contract if he begs for a trade or retires

Jan, I think you nailed it when you said that Gorton is waiting til the Aug NCAA Free Agency period passes to make any moves.

If no one is signed, I still think the best 2 young players out of camp will make the squad and the Rangers will go from there. If that's Nieves and Andersson, I think those 2 would be on the fourth line with Grabner and Desharnais would center the 3rd line with Miller and Vesey.

Then, if necessary, Gorton will make a move in season after evaluating for a few months.

Man that would lead to some sort of Hayes-Hayes-Haze line. Hungry for the biscuit and all that.

Well, there is the move DeAngelo to offense possibility. Although, I'm assuming they see how he looks on defense for awhile before that move. Speaking of which, I'll bet anyone a coke that AD spends time in Hartford this year.

I don't know what to expect, but I think they'll be a nice competition between Pionk, AD and Berzgalov for that spot that's for sure

DeAngelo has an advantage over them being right handed and having NHL playing time already

Realistically, Desharnais replaces Lindbergh as 4c. He's easily an above avg. 4th line center. Zib and Hayes should be 1+ 2 as they're both former 1st rounders. I see them both entering peak years. Hayes had a great offseason last year and looks like he's putting in the work again this summer. We've gained right D depth in a huge way with Shatty, AD and Pionk replacing G and Klein. We have a bunch of young forwards who still have best years ahead of them. Losing Stepan in middle is only possible depth issue. I don't see Gorton doing anything else except adding a player off waivers. Let's see who comes out of camp as our other center

I agree with most here that Gorton will look to sign a collegiate player, then look to the waiver wire (does that go by reverse order of final season standings in the off season, or do the playoffs factor in?). PTO's are a safe bet as well, but I'll leave that to you guys, as I don't currently know the market.
One thing I disagree with is the state of our depth. As deep as recent years? No. Deeper than other squads? I believe so. I look at our roster and I don't see it being too far from where it needs to be. We don't need a sure fire winning roster on Aug. 4th, so no need to worry (yet!).
One name I wouldn't be upset with for a PTO with is Iginla. I know that will stir up the masses and I know he isn't what he was. But, we're not looking for someone to take top 6 minutes away from who we already have. Jerome's experience, leadership, incredible personality and work ethic could be great additions. Plus his shot is still lethal, so in the right situations, he could be a plus (over who else is available).

I'll take the heat for this but if I were Gorton I would have already offered Jagr and Iginla a lowball amount to come play. Puempel is not an NHL roster level player and there is a lot riding on the other big question marks at the forward positions.

I will take 2 future HoF who at least know how to play and can do worlds of good for the younger guys. These 2 could still possibly put up 20 goals and 40+ points each. Come playoff time, they will leave any ounce they have left on the ice for one last shot to win. Give these guys some nights off to save mileage towards the end of the season if needed.

dude, I don't know. If they did this, what would be a red flag to me is that the team has no idea what they are doing, don't have a plan and were like "hey, lets just sign Iginla and Jagr and see what happens"

all summer long it seems like the team has had a plan. To get younger and to get faster. Besides the cap ramifications I just would be frightened that they don't have a plan if they did something like this.

Agreed. I see your point and that would be a valid question. In the end though I don't think it should stand in the way of icing the best possible lineup. Would anyone disagree that the Rangers are a better 7 game series team with Jagr and Iginla on the roster for $1M ea rather than being forced to play Puempel and pray that no one gets injured? Signing them for 1 year is a rental not a change in overall direction.
